As the name implies, ILT brings together knowledge and practice from various fields. These include neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and sensory integration and nutrition. ILT uses this knowledge to help overcome problems associated with learning and the demands of living. As such, our approach is eco-systemic. It considers everything within the individual and his/her environment that may be a factor causing learning or behaviour difficulties.
Each approach presents unique and useful perspectives for understanding and addressing various perspectives of various developmental, learning and emotional problems. Combining such knowledge has led to better insight to the difficulties experienced by children and adults.
The body functions as a holistic organism through a complex interplay of many systems. Traditionally, we have attempted to solve problems by addressing them at only one level, based on the narrow perspective of a single discipline (for example, psychotherapy, occupational therapy, remedial teaching, etc.) Such approaches seldom result in total or lasting success.
Approaches that we have combined into ILT are in themselves multidisciplinary by nature. These include, but are not limited to:
ILT is committed to helping all individuals to realise their potential with efficient functioning in school and/or the workplace as well as in the wider social world.

The HANDLE® approach is an integral component of ILT. It is an effective, drug-free alternative for diagnosing and treating most learning and behaviour disorders across the life span, including but not limited to Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity, Learning Disabilities such as Dyslexia and the Autistic spectrum of disorders.
Visit the HANDLE website at www.handle.org to read about the history of this approach, some of its important perspectives as well as many case studies.
This unique approach has helped thousands of people of every age. The vast majority has helped thousands of people of every age. The vast majority of those have achieved significant results without drugs, expensive equipment or weekly visits to therapists.
ILT is committed to helping children develop a readiness to learn. This is not quite the same as school readiness. In research conducted in the Tshwane area, we found that 51% of learners reported difficulties in school. The most common problems were concentration and focus, task completion and reading. Yet nearly every one of the children in the study had been found to be school ready.
These problems are all linked to neurological immaturity and could be helped by a movement programme designed to encourage natural neurological development.
In order to work preventatively, it is important to screen children at the beginning of their preschool year. Should areas of concern emerge, the children are given a movement programme either at school or at home. A second screening is then conducted in the final months, in order to check that the child is learning ready.
ILT offers a screening service to parents of individual children (aged 4 - 15) as well as to groups of children within a school setting.
We understand that parents and children experience many challenges in today's world. For this reason, we are also able to help with problems regarding:
This help is available either to individuals, families, private groups or larger groups such as in a school setting or to teaching staff.
Workshops are frequently run at schools in order to help teachers manage these important concerns.
The Listening Programme is a form of music based auditory therapy that ILT uses to address sound sensitivity, auditory discrimination and other processing difficulties and vestibular irregularities. Read more about this approach at www.advancedbrain.com.
Following a HANDLE® programme, it is sometimes necessary to help a client uncover intellectual (cognitive) skills that may be lagging due to previous neurological and academic difficulties. In these cases, we might suggest implementing SOI (Structure of Intellect). This involves an initial assessment (1 hour for children in the Foundation Phase, and 3½ hours for older children, adolescents and adults). Therapy consists of modules (pen and paper) being completed at home during the week with a weekly consultation for monitoring progress and/or introducing new modules. Duration of therapy depends on the severity of the problem, but is usually completed within 6 months. The cost of the therapy (available on request) includes the cost of the materials.
In some cases, when it is clear that neurodevelopmental issues are not the underlying cause of learning difficulties, SOI may be implemented immediately. The HANDLE® approach would not be used.
