Professor Shirley Kokot (B.A. (Hons Psychology); B. Ed (School Guidance); M. Ed (Counselling); D.Ed; STD) taught Special Needs Education at UNISA for over twenty years as well as maintaining a private practice as an Educational Psychologist. Her specialist field was originally Gifted Child Education but realisation that gifted children may also have learning difficulties motivated her to widen her field of specialisation to include neurodevelopmental causes underlying barriers to learning in all individuals. She furthered her studies overseas and brought back new approaches to South Africa. She left the university in 2007 to focus on sharing her insights and experience with other helping professionals.
She is the founder of Radford House, a school for gifted children in Johannesburg (www.radfordhouse.co.za), served as the President of the National Association for Gifted and Talented Children in South Africa for 13 years and on the Executive Committee of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. She received the President’s Award for distinguished service to the field in 2007.
