Alexis: a gifted child with diagnosed ADHD

Alexis was 7 years and 10 months old when she was referred for help. She was in Grade 2 and had been diagnosed with ADHD, as well as auditory and visual-motor perceptual dysfunctioning by a psychologist, neurologist and occupational therapist. She had also received vision therapy.

Nico: labelled with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Nico is a 10 year old boy. He is quiet but has a wide smile that lights up his freckled face. He enjoys reading and computer games but also plays cricket and he swims. Other favourite pastimes include wrestling and playing imaginary games with his younger brother. Nico was born with a clubfoot but no intellectual impairments. An IQ test given during Grade 1 showed a superior intelligence.

Mary was seven years old when she was referred for help. She was a very bright, articulate, compassionate and fun loving little person. She was also experiencing great difficulties in her first grade classroom.

Jason

Jason was 11 years old and in Grade 5 when his parents approached ILT. According to the school, he was struggling. In spite of showing excellent verbal abilities, he could not write legibly at all. He didn’t take part in any sport. He wanted to play rugby but could not catch the ball. He was always in conflict with his class mates for pushing them when standing in line. Not knowing how to help, his teachers recommended that he attend a remedial school.

Ruth

Ruth is in Grade 0. She is a friendly girl of average build who seems eager to please, but finds it difficult to comply with instructions. She is easily distracted and is constantly fidgeting or moving on her chair. Her teacher and parents are concerned about her school behavior and lack of ‘school readiness’ and also very concerned about her habit of masturbating openly during rest time in the afternoons.

John, aged 8 years and 4 months, is a delightful child who cooperated willingly during the evaluation. However, he was having problems paying attention at school and at home. He experiences difficulties completing tasks in class and his parents and teacher are concerned about the poor progress he is making at school.
